Overview

Blender provides a coordinated environment for building objects, animating scenes and producing finished images. Mesh editing, sculpting, materials, lighting and rendering form part of a larger workflow that can also include rigging, simulation and compositing. Its scripting and extension facilities allow studios and individuals to customize production.

The application is developed as free software, making its source and core toolset available without a conventional per-seat purchase. Its breadth requires learning several distinct disciplines. A single suite can reduce transfers between applications, but projects still depend on appropriate assets, production organization and artistic judgment.

Key features

Historical significance

Blender demonstrates how community funding and open development can sustain a complex creative application. It reduced financial barriers to learning and producing 3D work, while its open projects linked tool development with actual films. Its history also shows that an application can survive the failure of an earlier commercial organization.

History and development

Ton Roosendaal began Blender at the animation studio NeoGeo in 1994, initially as an in-house production tool. Public distribution followed in 1998. The commercial NaN period ended in financial difficulty, after which a community-funded effort secured the software's release as open source in 2002.

The Blender Foundation and wider contributors subsequently developed new generations of the application. Open movie projects helped test tools against production needs. Major interface, rendering and procedural changes broadened its role from a specialist alternative into a substantial creative platform.
