Cakewalk SONAR
A Windows digital audio workstation descended from Cakewalk's sequencing products, combining multitrack recording, MIDI editing, loop-based arrangement and mixing.
Overview
SONAR brings audio recordings, MIDI performances and software instruments into a track-based production environment. Users can record several sources, edit clips, arrange a song and mix the result with effects and automation. Loop-related tools support assembling and adapting repeated musical material.
Its Windows focus made it part of the PC recording ecosystem, including interfaces, drivers and plugin formats. The product evolved through several owners and names, so a feature listed for a recent Cakewalk Sonar release should not automatically be attributed to the original SONAR application. The historical profile concerns the broader workstation lineage.
Key features
- Multitrack audio recording
- MIDI sequencing and editing
- Loop and clip arrangement
- Mixer effects and automation
- Software instrument and plugin support
Historical significance
SONAR demonstrates the development of a MIDI sequencer into a complete native Windows studio. Its history includes changing audio technologies and the commercial challenges of sustaining a mature creative application. The continuity of workflows across several ownership changes also makes it a useful example of how a software community and accumulated projects can outlast a particular business model.
History and development
Cakewalk introduced SONAR in 2001 as the next generation after its Pro Audio products. Its design combined Cakewalk's MIDI background with audio recording and loop-oriented production.
Roland and later Gibson owned Cakewalk during subsequent periods. Gibson ceased active development in 2017, and BandLab acquired Cakewalk assets in 2018, continuing the workstation as Cakewalk by BandLab. A later Sonar-branded product followed. These transitions explain the changing capitalization, licensing and product names found in its history.
