Overview

PowerPoint creates slide-based presentations for meetings, teaching and public speaking. Themes, layouts and master slides provide visual consistency, while text, images, charts and media carry the content. Speaker notes and presentation views support delivery separately from the audience-facing slides.

The application can produce handouts and exported files as well as live presentations. Later versions added more extensive collaboration and multimedia capabilities. Effective use depends on the structure of the explanation and the setting in which it will be delivered; slide software supplies a medium rather than a substitute for an argument.

Key features

Historical significance

PowerPoint made computer-authored presentations a familiar organizational practice. It reduced the effort needed to revise and reproduce visual material, while also encouraging a recognizable style of communication. Its influence is therefore both technical and cultural, shaping how businesses and educators package information for an audience.

History and development

Forethought released PowerPoint for the Macintosh in 1987. Microsoft acquired Forethought later that year and continued developing the product. Windows editions and Office distribution subsequently brought it into a much broader business software environment.

The original application addressed slide and transparency preparation. Later versions added screen-based delivery, animation, video and connected sharing. Its development follows the movement from physical presentation materials to digital projection and then remote collaboration, while preserving the central concept of a sequence of editable slides.
