Overview

WordPerfect creates and formats documents with tools for text, tables, references and page structure. Its Reveal Codes view exposes formatting instructions alongside the text, giving users a direct way to diagnose or adjust document behavior. This is a defining part of its editing model.

The application has been used in settings where complex formatting and established document practices matter, including legal offices. Capabilities differ between historical DOS versions and later graphical editions. The value of its format controls also depends on understanding how codes interact, rather than treating a document as appearance alone.

Key features

Historical significance

WordPerfect shows how editing techniques and organizational expertise can sustain user loyalty across changes in market leadership. Reveal Codes made document structure visible in a particularly practical way. Its history also records the transition from DOS productivity software to graphical office suites, including the difficulty of adapting a successful product to a new platform.

History and development

The WordPerfect lineage began at Brigham Young University in 1979 and reached commercial users through Satellite Software International. DOS releases became especially prominent in the 1980s, supported by keyboard-oriented workflows and a reputation for extensive printer support.

The product later moved through WordPerfect Corporation and Novell before Corel acquired it in 1996. Windows competition changed its market position, but it retained a dedicated audience and continued within WordPerfect Office. That history separates its early dominance from its later role as an alternative document environment.
